Motorola Announces It Will Sell Few Devices For 2012, We Breathe A Sigh Of Relief

Motorola is using CES to provide a clearer picture of its strategy for 2012. In a roundtable discussion, CEO Sanjay Jha highlights the company intends to release fewer devices this year— not an onslaught such as what we saw particularly in the 2nd half of 2011. Jha himself summed it up best:

“A lot of products that are roughly the same doesn’t drive the market to a new place”.

The end result of that statement is quality over quantity. In fact, Jha himself contends the company plans to pursue fewer new ideas in an effort to make more things stick. What ...

Bug Volume Galaxy Nexus: il fix è già disponibile

By iNicc0lo | 28 nov 2011

It’s simple— MOTO will continue to pour resources into the current lineup of MOTO phones with prompt software updates and enhancements, while making the few anticipated phones for this year be the best they can possibly be. Let’s see Google’s impact on MOTO’s newfound strategy.

Sony Xperia S Hands-On At CES 2012

With its other cousin, the Sony Xperia Ion, another newcomer made it to CES this year and that’s the Sony Xperia S.  The Xperia S, another first in the US to sport the “Sony” only branding shows off the cool transparent illuminated element we’ve seen in previous shots.  It does a great job accenting the 4.3-inch display itself, which happens to be 720p.  Like other Sony products, the device offers the usual Bravia mobile engine for the rendering of beautiful rich colors on pics and videos.  The device sports dual cameras like most, however, the front facing shooter offers 720p while the rear can capture in 1080p.  Not a bad combination.  Add to that a whopping 32 gigs of on-board memory, and Sony’s full-on entertainment network with unlimited movies, videos and music and you have yourself a party.

een, as you can see in the hands-on video, renders incredible video and you can transfer that to any 1080p capable device for optimal viewing.  The handset will not come with LTE radios on-board but will instead be a global phone offering HSPA+ speeds.  You’ll be able to snag the device unlocked to work your GSM carrier of choice here in the US.  Oh, and did we mention the device has NFC?  Check out our hands-on video below along with some screen shots of the device next to its cousin the newly unveiled Xperia Ion.  Don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below and be sure to check out the rest of our CES 2012 coverage here if you haven’t already.

Samsung commercial ‘The Next Big Thing is Already Here’ to run on Facebook and during football games

During the night, we posted a video of what appeared to be a 60 second Samsung commercialpoking fun at customers waiting in line for a phone. I can’t seem to think who they could be making fun of. Anyways, we were wondering if this ad was ever going to be used.  Well Samsung just dropped a press release stating that they are going to be running the ad and they plan to be aggressive.

“The Next Big Thing is Already Here” (as in the Galaxy S II) is the message and it will begin running on Facebook today, and you will see the spot during the Thanksgiving-day NFL games on Fox and CBS.  If that’s not enough, it will also run during college football games from now until Christmasunately, those will be shortened 15 and 30 second spots.

“This campaign has been developed to bring consumers into the online and off-line buzz generated by the Galaxy S II since it first launched back in September,” said Todd Pendleton, chief marketing officer for Samsung Mobile. “We want to let people know that there is a better choice out there when it comes to purchasing a smartphone. The next big thing is already here – you can have the latest, most innovative device without waiting in line.”

I think the ad is brilliant, but I do think it’s a little late. This should have aired right around the release of the iPhone 4S, but late is better than never. I am just glad to see they are actually going to run it. Checkout our story last night to watch this funny video.

It seems that some crafty developer has set out to prove Google and HTC wrong by showing them that it is possible to run ICS on devices that have “incompatible hardware”. Some fella going by the name jcarrz1 over at XDA has posted a video showing the oldschool HTC G1 of all devices, running a build of the latest Android 4.0 software.

As you will notice in the video below, the G1 seems to be struggling fairly bad at completing rather menial tasks such as swapping from screen to screen and opening smaller apps. I am not sure you could call this port usable and I don’t foresee many people dying to get their hands on it. Regardless, this is a huge feat and I don’t mean to downplay the success because I was truly impressed to see what jcarrz1 and team have accomplished. Great work guys, I am curiou what’s next!

One quick disclaimer– if you didn’t update your tablet originally, you will be able to download the update over the air. Samsung Galaxy S II and LG Optimus 3D Already Receive ICS Port

Its only been a few days since the ICS ROM dropped and you can bet ROM builders have been awake ever since trying to successfully complete a port. Some dudes have already managed to port rather slick looking builds onto their Galaxy S II and Optimus 3D. That did not take long at all!

Now don’t go getting all excited thinking that you can already throw one of these builds onto either your SGSII or O3D. The crafty gentlemen have yet to release instructions and the SGSII doesn’t even have the radio, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth working properly. As you can see in the picture above, the SGSII still shows ICS’ software buttons but plans are in the works to have them removed. Jump past the split to check out the videos showing the devices in action and rest assured knowing this could be on your own device soon enough.

Google and Motorola Merger Approved By Motorola Mobility Shareholders

Back in August we reported on the possible merger of Google and Motorola. Well as of yesterday after a special shareholder’s meeting, it appears that shareholders are on board with this idea, overwhelmingly so. According to the press release 99% of shareholders approved of the merger. Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility was quoted to say:

“We are pleased and gratified by the strong support we have received from our stockholders, with more than 99 percent of the voting shares voting in support of the transaction. We look forward to working with Google to realize the significant value this combination will bring to our stockholders and all the new opportunities it will provide our dedicated employees, customers, and partners.”

This meeting and approval brings this merger a step closer to happening. While Google was hoping to acquire Motorola by the end of 2011, they are now expecting the 12.5 billion dollar acquisition to occur in early 2012. While this does bring this process another step further, this does not guarantee that the merger will happen. Other closing conditions could possibly cause the merger to be either delayed or cause it not to happen entirely.

As no company has publicly spoke against the merger, and some hiced support for it, The U.S. Justice Department will still have to approve it. At this point however, it appears as if balls are rolling in Google’s favor and that this deal should go through. Hit the break below to read the full press release.

Firefox Nightlies Incorporate Flash Despite Adobe Discontinuing It

Adobe discontinuing Flash support for mobile browsers came as a shock for most when theannouncement was made. What is even more surprising is that even with this announcement Firefox has implemented the plug-in into its nightly builds. While those who have installed the mobile version of the popular web browser have been calling it for a while now, even developers are puzzled. Dknite was quoted to say in his blog:

“Since Firefox’s for Android inception back in March 2010, the top request and comment is ‘We want Flash, We Want Flash!’  Why people want that buggy plugin still floors me today, but Mozilla’s heard you loud and clear.”

So while I haven’t tested this personally, those of you interested in taking it for a test run can download the file below and let us know what you think of it in the comments section. Make sure that when you go to manually install it, that you have the Unknown Sources option checked under the application area of your settings.  With Flash being discontinued it will be interesting to see how long flash support will remain in any of the browsers. Who knows, maybe Sibblingz Spaceport 3.0 will take the place of Flash down the road.
